As we reported last week as Chrome OS 56 finally arrived, the ASUS Chromebook Flip C302 was the only new addition to the list of Chromebooks with Play Store support available in the Stable Channel.
But it looks like this isn’t the case for everyone.
A good number of readers are reporting that their new, shiny ASUS Flips aren’t giving them access to Android Apps with Chrome OS 56.
While we’ve seen Google withhold Play Store support on a per-device basis in the past, this is the first time we’ve seen patchy results on a single device.
Double Check
If you are a current or prospective Chromebook Flip owner, try out a few things for us and let us know in the comments if you do or don’t see the Play Store on your device.
- Check your Chrome OS Version by going to Settings > About Chrome OS (up top by search) > Check Version (our unit is on 56.0.2924.87)
- Verify you have an ARC Version visible right under Version and Platform versions
- Go to Settings > Google Play Store > Select ‘Enable Google Play Store on your Chromebook’
- Check your apps by hitting the circle in the dock or your Search button. Sometimes the Play Store isn’t right on top
Honestly, if a notification hasn’t appeared already, prompting you to enable the Play Store, something has likely gone awry.
I’d try out a Powerwash (go to Settings > type ‘Powerwash’ in search up top > Click Powerwash and follow the prompts) if you still aren’t seeing Play Store access.
If none of this works, we have to assume that Google has pulled support for the time being. As we said above, we’ve not seen this happen on a per-device basis before.
However, with all of this still being in Beta mode, they can really do whatever the deem necessary.
Let us know in the comments if you are or are not seeing Android Apps and your versions and we’ll try to reach out to our contacts in the meantime and see what exactly is going on.
