The Samsung Chromebook Plus V2 has undergone a massive rejuvenation lately thanks to some price drops and hardware boosts. With both of those changes in play, I’ve talked previously about the fact that it is finally time in the life cycle of this Chromebook for users to perk up and pay attention. At the current asking price, it has become the go-to recommendation when someone asks about a new purchase, and I think for the majority of our readers looking for a new device, it checks most of the boxes.
I don’t want to rehash what I’ve already said in that regard, however, so have a look at the review in the video above or check out this article if you want to dig a bit deeper into why I think this is such a great Chromebook for the price. Today isn’t necessarily about my thoughts on this device or about you buying one. Instead, I want to appeal to those who may be getting duped into buying a sub-par version of the Samsung Chromebook Plus V2 from Amazon just because of Prime Day mania.
As it frequently happens, deals on Prime day seem like the most compelling and best on offer, but they often aren’t. Wrapped up in the shopping euphoria of Prime Day, shoppers can get a bit tunnel-visioned and forget that there are countless other retailers out there ready to mark down similar items even more aggressively than Amazon. The Samsung Chromebook Plus V2 is probably one of the most egregious examples of this, and I want to show you why.
The listing for this Chromebook that has been put on a handful of tech blogs is a decent deal on the surface: the Samsung Plus V2 in Light Titan, a Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage with a convertible design and stylus for only $379. I’ll be honest, that’s still a decent deal. However, you have to remember that this model is the mostly-plastic variant that we warned consumers about a few months ago. It is not the same as the mostly-aluminum Stealth Silver model and we’ve detailed that in the video below.
While this alone is enough of a reason to look elsewhere, the bigger issue with this Amazon listing is the internal specifications on offer. Again, with the Amazon ‘deal’, you are getting the Celeron 3965Y processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. While not terrible, this is far from the best variation of Samsung’s latest Chromebook
With the deal we’ve previously highlighted from Best Buy, you can get a better-built, better-spec’d model for less money! Assuming you have a student in the house or in your family, you can actually get the Stealth Silver model of the Plus V2 with the much-faster Core m3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage from Best Buy for only $349! That is $30 less than Amazon for not the same Chromebook, but a Chromebook that looks better is built better and performs insanely better than the one being offered over at Amazon.
So, consider this a PSA. Don’t always assume things on Amazon are the best on offer. Don’t assume that just because it is Amazon Prime Day that the deals being offered to you are the best deals on the internet. Lastly, don’t assume that because Prime Day will soon be over that deals on Chromebooks will cease anytime soon. And, for the love of all things Chrome, don’t buy that Amazon version of this awesome Chromebook. Get the Best Buy version instead. (See this post for how to get that additional $50 discount for students)
