It is just the beginning, folks. Though we knew the day was coming at some point, the reality that a Chrome OS tablet is in the works is still crazy-exciting and more details just keep coming.
Earlier today, Gabriel reported on the first signs of a Chrome OS Tablet in the repositories, and as we fully expect to continue, more details have already emerged.
Screen Size
First up, we have a screen size. Keep in mind, it seems we are very early in this whole process, but we have a commit referencing a 4:3 display at 7.85-inches. The resolution, while not impressive, comes in at 1024×768.
These stats aren’t very exciting, but to put it in perspective, the size, aspect ratio, and resolution are all very similar to the original iPad Mini.
Additionally, keep in mind that this could simply be a reference panel for testing, but it stands to reason that they would at least try to test on the size and aspect ratio that will be in use on the device.
Further Tablet Proof
We’ve already seen a few comments on social media wondering if this is, in fact, a tablet.
We have some further proof.
In this commit, we see the ‘tablet mode switch’ being removed. That switch is responsible for convertible Chromebooks making the switch from laptop to tablet mode when bent backwards. The removal of this switch points to one thing: ‘Scarlet’ is a tablet only.
In this same commit, in a message down near the bottom, we see this:
How will we inform the host that we’re always in tablet mode? Is there a chrome setting / pref somewhere?
If the earlier evidence didn’t convince you, this seems pretty firm.
‘Scarlet’ is the first Chrome OS Tablet. When we’ll see it is still a mystery. Who makes it, how much is it, what accessories will it come with, etc. are all questions we can’t wait to find the answers to.
But, for now, we wait. And, as always, as we find more we will pass it on.
