Many people are receiving an email from Google One asking them to subscribe or upgrade to their 2TB storage plan and in return, they’re offering a free Nest Mini. Ever since Google announced that they would remove free unlimited storage for Google Drive and Photos files beyond the 15GB account limit after June 2021, users have been eyeballing their options. Google One is fairly priced and 2TB of storage isn’t bad for $9.99 per month, but you’d have to be the right person.
80 percent of Google account holders can get by for the next 3 years at their current usage rates without eating up the remaining 15GB of their free storage, so there’s little reason to upgrade until then. You can check your storage estimate if you want to know how this applies to your account.
Google did recently start offering a VPN to go with their 2TB plans and up, but of the people I’ve spoken to, they said that without the need for the extra storage, the VPN was not enough to sweeten the deal for them. Having locked the Color Pop feature in Google Photos behind a One subscription for pictures without depth information, the company was met with confusion and frustration by users. I would say that all in all, they’re not doing too hot in convincing people to upgrade.
Upgrade to a Google One 2 TB annual storage plan and get the new Google Nest Mini for free, retail value $49. We’ll even cover the shipping/ Play music, add things to your shopping list, meditate, and more by saying ‘Hey, Google.’ Limit one per plan while suppliers last. Offer ends 12/9/2020.

Keep an eye on your inbox if you’re interested. It feels like they’re giving out Nest Minis for almost everything lately, so if you’re not trying to spend $99.99 per year on cloud storage (up from the 200GB plan which is only $2.99 per month, so it’s a third of the annual price), don’t feel pressured to upgrade just for a fifty dollar piece of hardware – I’m sure there will be other opportunities.
While it seems to cut the cost of the service in half, it’s more like getting a discount at a store in exchange for getting a store gift card – your money is still locked into that business and it isn’t really staying in your pocket. That’s not to say it’s a bad thing though – If you’re someone who really wants a Nest Mini or could benefit from the extra storage and VPN, it may be worth it. Being the kind of guy that is always taken by BOGO offers at the store, I never realize until I get home that I have no use for the second item, so just think it over. I won’t be shy about saying that Google’s attempts at making Google One palatable have been meager so far and that they will have to do more to win me over.
