Here lately I seem to get more and more excited every time I hear of a new product making its way across the pond. Along with the expanding market for Chromebooks, seeing #madebygoogle devices available globally points Google’s ever-growing commitment to their new found commercial successes.
A recent announcement by Google’s SVP of Hardware, Rick Osterloh, tells of Alphabet’s plans to compete with Amazon Echo in the United Kingdom. At some point in the second quarter of this year, the Google Home Smart speaker will be made officially available in the UK. That means as early as April our friends in the Sovereign State may see the Smart Home Assistant hitting shelves or at least available online.
Until now, the only way to get your hands on the Google Home was to toss the dice and order from a retailer in the States. The problem here, like Chromebooks, are all the caveats that may come along for the ride. Will the warranty be voided? Can I get customer support? Will it even work? Can I return it? The short answer to all of those: buyer beware.
With products like the ASUS C302 Flip, Acer Chromebook R13 and now the Google Home being attainable through proper channels in the UK, it’s our sincere hope that Google’s weight will persuade other manufacturers to follow suit. The technology playing field needs to be leveled and this could be the small push that has been long over due.
