It has been a while since I visited DirecTV NOW on my Chromebook for a couple of reasons. The first being the fact that YouTube TV has rolled out in our area. The second being Microsoft Silverlight which prevents Chrome devices from viewing the streaming service via the web.
In an ironic turn of events, it appears that AT&T’s cord-cutting service has cut ties with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser.
In a June report from AppleInsider, a reader was greeted with this message when attempting to stream DirecTV Now from Apple’s Safari browser.
Since that time, DirecTV Now has, in fact, ended support for Internet Explorer and recommend the Chrome web browser for the best streaming experience. The official help page does still list Safari 8+ as a supported platform but my bet is that the browser’s days are numbered.
When using Chrome to stream DirecTV Now, users will still be prompted to install Microsoft Silverlight. That means still no support for Chrome OS. One more handy use for Android Apps on a Chromebook if you ask me.
At the end of the day, there are more ways to cut the cord and stream your favorite services than you can shake a stick at. If Internet Explored is your big hang up, you might have bigger problems than what you’re going to watch tonight.
No offense.
