If The Turing Test for Stadia didn’t impress you with their rendition of Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa, strap yourselves in, becuase Destiny 2’s new expansion, Beyond Light has just been revealed as a part of the Season of Arrivals during the Summer Games Fest. It also takes place on Europa, but of course in a much more open and expansive rendition.
Beyond Light will see the player discovering mysterious pyramid ships on Jupiters moon and inheriting some sort of dark power – hence the name Beyond Light. Clever, I guess? Maybe in order to defeat the darkness, you have to become it. This leaves interesting questions for the story in Destiny 3, whenever that comes out in the future.
“Beyond Light takes you to Europa, the frozen moon of Jupiter, birthplace to the Exo machines and the site of the Deep Stone Crypt,” Mark Noseworthy, general manager at Bungie, told us. “On Europa, you’ll meet Eramis, the leader of an empire of Fallen. She’s learning to harness the power that comes directly from the pyramid ships.
“To defeat her, you’ll have to harness that power too. For the first time since Destiny 1 launched six years ago, Guardians will acquire a brand new damage type called Stasis. So not just super or a new grenade, an actual new damage type in the universe.”
Beyond Light will be available on September 22, 2020 and will come on the same day to Stadia as well. In fact, the preorder page for the game has already gone live on the Stadia Store as you can see below.
Bungie also revealed that they have plans for expansions across the next three years as well, which will no doubt come to Stadia as well. The expansions named The Witch Queen, due out in 2021, and Lightfall, due a year later, will show the Guardian’s climactic fight with the darkness.
The company has no plans yet for a Destiny 3, but has said that they intend to cycle out old content like the Cosmodrome from the game as it’s becoming much too large to manage as they add new expansions.
