As exciting as the Chromecast Ultra is, its release came with one very large drawback: no available 4K content from its maker.
Google looks to have remedied this, however, as we are now seeing some 4K content finally hit the Play Store.
We’ve covered places you can go to get your hands on 4K content, and though we listed Google Play in that list, it was in a ‘coming soon’ context. As of today, there are now 125 titles in Google Play Movies & TV for you to feast your eyes on.
Of course, you’ll need a 4K Television, Chromecast Ultra or other 4K-ready streaming device with access to Google Play in order to enjoy this content.
Mainly, you’ll find big titles like Captain Philips, Star Trek Beyond and The Secret Life of Pets. Unfortunately, for the time being, you need to purchase these titles. Rental is currently not available.
The transition to 4K is still painful sometimes.
To ease things a bit, Google is throwing a bone to Chromecast Ultra owners, gifting each with a free movie from a pre-selected list.
While this isn’t an end-to-end collection of 4K content, it is a move in the right direction. Along with Netflix, Hulu and Vudu, 4K content is slowly showing up and becoming available to those with the hardware to take advantage of it.
The big win here, for sure, is the simplicity of Chromecast Ultra owners (or owners-to-be) having some content from a primary source to consume. As the months pass, we’ll only see more and more 4K content. With 4K television prices plummeting left and right, 2017 looks to be the year that 4K finally breaks into the mainstream.
Now, if we can get television providers to get on board, 4K can just become the standard.
That could take a bit longer, though.
