Chromecast Setup Changes: Today Google Cast Becomes Google Home

Chromecast Setup Changes: Today Google Cast Becomes Google Home

October 26, 2016 By Robby Payne 4 Comments

homeiconWe reported on this upcoming change not too long ago, so this isn’t really a surprise. However, I’m sure there are folks who didn’t read that article and may be wondering why they are seeing an update to an app they didn’t download.

As we previously reported, the Google Cast app that is used to set up and control your Chromecast devices has a new name and new app icon. Instead of Google Cast, the app is now aptly named Google Home. And it looks like the image above.

The update process is a bit interesting, for sure. We knew the update would change the app name and icon, but the way it showed up as an update was a bit different. You can see from the screenshot that it simply appears as if you have an update to the Google Home app.

But, wait…I never installed Google Home

That’s the strange part here. The app didn’t wait for the update for its costume change. I’m guessing one of the previous updates loaded in the images and needed assets for the Play Store to simply redefine it. Instead of appearing like an update to Google Cast, it looks like an update to a different app. A different app you don’t have installed.

Upon updating and opening the app, though, everything is still in order. The app looks exactly as it did before when it was Google Cast, giving you upcoming shows that are ready for your streaming pleasure.

One change I’ve seen is the icon in the upper right corner that is your device discover panel. Obviously as Google Home, Google Wifi, and Chromecast Ultra enter the fray very soon, we’ll see some specific controls for those devices too.

For now, the app is just what you’ve used before in Google Cast, with a new name and a new face.
