We’ve written about this ‘feature’ at Chrome Unboxed a few times and the responses are always polarized: love and hate. If you are unsure what I’m talking about, you can read more about it here. In a nutshell, Chromecast and Chromecast Audio sessions put a notification on any Android device on the shared network.
This notification can be a quick way to access whatever is playing from whatever source it is playing from and pause the playback. You can also skip tracks as well. I don’t mind the feature that much, but it is an open invitation for people to mess with each other.
At the office we routinely pause and skip one another’s music just to aggravate. This is fun and not that big of a deal, but the issue we see is people coming and going with access to our network that don’t know what this notification is. So, they hit that ‘X’ to get rid of it and kill the casting session without even knowing what they are doing.
While you can disable this on your phone, there hasn’t been a way to fully turn this off before now.
Not Yet, but Soon
According to a find by Android Police, a fix is coming via the Google Home app. All you’ll have to do is:
- Open the Google Home app
- Tap Devices at the top to see available Chromecast devices
- Scroll to the device you’d like to stop allowing the network notifications
- Tap the 3-dot menu button
- In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu
- Select ‘Let others control your casted media’ to turn it off
The update is rolling out soon as Google has put these instructions in the Cast media support page. Hopefully this indicates the change is coming very soon as it will be nice to have a bit of control over this loved/hated feature.
