If you are new to Chromebooks, you’ll soon find what many of us already have: the perks that come along with being a Chromebook users can be pretty sweet. Over at the Chromebook Perks page (or right in your ‘Explore’ app sitting in your app launcher right now), there is a massive list of small benefits that are yours to claim as a Chrome OS user, like a year of free Google One, 3 months of Stadia Pro and/or GeForce NOW Founders, and 3 months of free YouTube Premium, just to name a few. Right now, that page is packed with offers, and one of the newest additions is pretty awesome. (Thanks to Johanna Romero for the heads-up!)
A solid video editing option
Though many people still may not be familiar with Kinemaster, I’ve long trumpeted this little-known video editor as perhaps the best video tool available on Android. To be fair, with the arrival of Adobe Premiere Rush, that may not be the case any longer, but Kinemaster packs a ton of features in its app and it was the go-to editor for me before Joe came along and made Chrome Unboxed videos what they are today.
Though Kinemaster still feels like a phone/tablet app, it can be a useful tool on Chromebooks and is especially comfortable on touch-based devices. While I’d love to see it grow a bit in the UI department for Chromebooks and Android tablets that have a mouse and keyboard, Kinemaster is capable of using keyboard shortcuts and navigating completely with a mouse or touchpad once you figure out how. With a UI geared for touchscreen devices, however, you may find it easier to operate with your fingers on the screen.
With tools like speed control, the ability to pull the audio off of a video track, color filters, hundreds of built in transitions, and countless title tools, you can make some seriously sweet edited videos with Kinemaster once you learn your way around the interface (they have a robust YouTube library of tutorials). I like to think of it like Apple Movies on steroids: not a full-blown pro editor, but way more than most amateurs will ever use.
How to cash in on the perk
Sound interesting? Well, all you need to do is head over to the Chromebook Perks page or open up your Explore app on your Chromebook, scroll down to the Kinemaster perk, and click on Get perk. You need to be on a Chromebook you own and on an account you’ve never redeemed a Kinemaster promo code on before. I tried to sign up after a few years of holding the pro-level account and had no luck, but Gabriel got the perk and had Kinemaster Pro for quite some time, too. Others I’ve talked to have had no issues with redemption, whatsoever, so I’d advise if it doesn’t work the first time, go back the next day and try again.
Once you hit that Get perk button, you’ll be taken to the Play Store and a you’ll either instantly be ready to roll or a pop up will appear already filled with your promo code. You can copy that code and store it away for later redemption until October 26th, 2021 if you so choose or you can click redeem and you’ll be taken to the app download from there in the event you’ve not downloaded it already. Kinemaster charges its $3.99 membership fee through the Play Store, so you don’t need to do anything else in the actual app once your code is redeemed. All you need to do is get to editing.
