Thanks to an attentive observation by one of our readers, we have been made aware of the exact fingerprint scanner that is being tested currently for the ‘Gru’ baseboard. As we’ve discussed before, ‘Gru’ is likely the mainboard of the upcoming ‘Kevin’ device which looks to be packed to the gills with sensors and features.
Mentioned in this commit as the FPC2050, the device looks to be a more standard type of fingerprint scanner, not the integrated trackpad variety. Either way, it’s very cool to know that this testing is happening on verified hardware, not just some testing equipment. We simply wanted to follow yesterday’s article with a quick pic of the scanner itself above.
Judging by the pics, it looks like the scanner will be a quick touch sensor much like what we see on phones currently and not a swiping scanner. I’ve personally used a few devices with the latter and they are unreliable and quite aggravating. Glad to see this won’t be the case with ‘Gru’ based devices.
It’s also quite small, so the variance of where this sensor could end up is total conjecture at this time. Regardless, I know there are many of you excited to see this in action. Hopefully our wait isn’t too long!
