One of the key apps for any OS is the file explorer. In your files app, you organize, find, arrange, open, delete and generally manage the files on your device.
File management (or lack thereof) is a key component of the user interface on any device. This is no different for Chrome OS and Chromebooks.

Many critics of Chrome OS would first find fault with the lack of basic features in the Files app. Compared to Mac OS’ Finder and Windows Explorer, the Chrome OS Files app is pretty basic.
However, I’m not here to talk about all the things missing from the app. I’m here to talk about a new feature coming soon.
Found in the Chromium Repositories by Chrome Story, it looks like the newest feature on its way to the Files app will be a Recents folder in addition to your Drive, Downloads, Attached Drives, and Media folders.
Here is the language from the commit:
This CL adds a new root “Recent” on the directory tree in Files app to access the recent files.
How this will fully function isn’t laid out here, but there’s not much to think about if we’re honest. Recents folders tend to show you the latest files you’ve downloaded, changed, or interacted with. I don’t know about you, but this is one of the features I’ve been missing.
Sometimes my Downloads folder gets a little out of control and difficult to navigate. A Recents folder helps navigate that mess and get me to the file I need much quicker.
Google Drive does this already, and I rely pretty heavily on it. I assume I’ll do the same when this arrives for my local files as well.
