Better late than never, Chrome OS 57 has made its way to the stable channel for most Chromebooks and Chrome OS devices. We’ll go ahead and get the big question out of the way. No, the Play Store did not come along for the ride. We are still firmly confident the Android Apps will make their way to Chrome OS with the release of version 58 in late April but we will have to wait and see.
The latest update to our beloved operating system brings with it the usual security updates, bug fixes and feature enhancements as well as some expected additions we have covered in recent weeks. Here is a rundown of the Chrome OS version 57.0.2987.123.
-
Enable silent authentication
-
Updated default wallpaper
-
Chrome Camera App Front/Rear Flip UI
-
Image copy/paste feature for Citrix Receiver on Chrome OS
There were more that a few devices excluded from this update including the AOpen Chromebase Mini, AOpen Chromebox Mini, Google Chromebook Pixel (2015), ASUS Chromebook Flip C302, , ASUS Chromebook Flip C100PA, Samsung Chromebook Plus, Acer Chromebook R13 (CB5 – 312T). Most certainly the delay on these devices is related to the timing of the Play Store as some devices seem to have their own timeline apart from the crowd.
I will be digging into the change log this evening to see what other, behind-the-scene changes have come with Chrome OS 57 and will report back with my findings. For those hoping on a wing and a prayer for Android Apps, be patient. Soon my friends, soon.
Note: I have found a commit in the repository attached to the AOpen Chromebox, codenamed ‘Fievel’, indicating that Arc++(Android Apps) will be enabled by default in version 57 for this device. Possibly the reason for the delay for the update coming to the Chromebox.
