As we reported a few days ago when talking about the ‘Kevin’ timeline, the 6-week window for Chrome OS 53 to hit the Stable Channel landed on Wednesday.
It looks like today is the roll out.
Chrome OS 53 has hit the Stable Channel for all but a few devices, and we’re betting a few of those will look mighty familiar to all of you. The devices left out are:
- 2015 Chromebook Pixel
- Acer Chromebook R11
- ASUS Chromebook Flip
- HP Chromebox CB1
- Acer Chromebook C7
While we are unsure why those last two devices are on the list, the first three should be quite familiar faces by now: they are the current devices that have access to The Play Store and it’s litany of Android Apps.
The devices that are seeing the update today, however, are not getting the Play Store immediately. We aren’t sure of the exact reason, but we feel hopeful that as the 3 devices in bold above get the Stable R53 update, the rest of the devices Google announced Play Store availability for will also get the update.
For now, all devices are getting:
- Material design overview mode
- SAML SSO for Chrome Apps
- Highlights – Accessibility feature
- New app API to enable watchdog behavior in kiosk apps
So, we aren’t left without anything new. However, R53 has been greatly anticipated and we are sad to see it arrive without Android App support.
Hopefully it’s only a short wait before we see the full roll-out begin!
